The Minisforum UM790 Pro is a small form factor desktop computer that was announced by MINISFORUM in May and is now available for pre-order. Priced at $519 and up, this compact PC is expected to start shipping to customers in early July.

Unboxing

The Minisforum UM790 Pro arrives in an eye-catching orange-black box, exuding a sense of luxury as you open it. Inside, you will find the mini PC itself, accompanied by a selection of useful accessories. These accessories include an AC adapter, AC cord, HDMI cable, VESA mount, and a simple manual to assist with setup and usage.

The included AC adapter weighs about 450g. It has a maximum power output of 119.7W, delivering 6.3A at 19.0V. This reliable power supply ensures that the UM790 Pro receives a stable and reliable power supply to maintain its performance.

Design

The Minisforum UM790 Pro is an incredibly compact mini desktop computer, measuring just 130 x 126 x 52 mm and weighing approximately 666 g. Its small size and lightweight design make it highly portable, fitting easily into a backpack for on-the-go use. Furthermore, it takes up minimal space on your desk, and if desired, it can be conveniently hidden behind a monitor thanks to its VESA mounting support.

The UM790 Pro features a sleek and durable metal housing that has a pleasant, moist feel to it. The left and right sides of the housing are equipped with large ventilation holes, allowing for efficient heat dissipation. At the back of the mini PC, there is a blower fan with an integrated heat sink, which helps to keep the system cool during operation.

On the front right side of the UM790 Pro, you’ll find several ports and features. These include a DMIC (Digital Microphone) input, a 3.5mm combo jack for audio input/output, and two USB4 ports (Type-C) with support for alternate power delivery (Alt PD). Additionally, there is a reset switch for convenient system resets or troubleshooting.

At the back right side of the mini PC, you’ll find several more ports. These include four USB 3.2 ports (Type-A) for connecting various peripherals, a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port for fast and reliable wired networking, and two HDMI 2.1 ports for connecting external displays with high-resolution support.

The left and right sides of the UM790 Pro are dedicated solely to ventilation, ensuring proper airflow and heat dissipation for optimal system performance. To access the interior components, you can remove the four screws located under the housing rubber feet. The back cover of the mini PC is integrated with a heat sink and a fan, which effectively cools the two M.2 SSDs through a heat conductive sheet. It’s important to note that the cooling fan cable may have limited length, so caution is advised when disassembling the system.

The Minisforum UM790 Pro is powered by AMD’s Ryzen 9 7940HS processor, a 35-54 watt chip with 8 cores and 16 threads. This processor boasts impressive specifications, including support for speeds up to 5.2 GHz, 8MB of L2 cache, 16MB of L3 cache, and 12 RDNA 3 compute units. The integrated AMD Radeon 780M Graphics, running at a frequency of 2800MHz, further enhances the visual performance of the mini PC. It’s worth noting that the same chip can be found in the GMK NucBox K4.

Additionally, it supports the latest AV1 codec, making it suitable for video editing tasks when combined with additional memory.

In the popular online action RPG “BLUE PROTOCOL,” benchmarking with both the highest and lowest quality presets at FHD resolution yielded scores of 4889 and 14208, respectively. The low-quality preset achieved a comfortable average frame rate of 97.750. The mini PC also performs well in GPU-focused benchmarks, with 3DMark Night Raid scoring 30133, Wild Life scoring 16377, Fire Strike scoring 6927, and Time Spy scoring 3082. The performance uplift provided by the Zen 4 CPU and RDNA 3 GPU is evident.
