Roborock S7 Max Ultra review: It's a dream for any housewife

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra is a notable addition to Roborock’s S7 series of robot vacuum cleaners. While the S8 series offers overall improvements, the S7 Max Ultra focuses on enhancing obstacle detection with its innovative ReactivAI system, which combines lasers and a camera.

In terms of design, the S7 Max Ultra closely resembles the S7 model. However, it boasts improved suction power and introduces the feature of warm air mop drying, which is more in line with the advanced S8 Pro Ultra model.

One of the standout features of the S7 Max Ultra is its maintenance-friendly design. It comes with a robust docking station that not only recharges the vacuum but also automatically empties its dust collector, refills its water tank, and washes and dries the mop. This all-in-one station simplifies the cleaning process, making it more convenient for users.

Design

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra showcases a circular design with dimensions of 35 x 35.3 x 9.6 cm, making it slightly bulky due to the top-mounted LiDAR dome. Despite its size, the robot is still slim enough to navigate under most furniture, ensuring effective floor cleaning. The top part of the robot houses three convenient quick-access buttons and a flap that conceals the dust bin and HEPA filter. This design element eliminates the need to flip the robot upside down when changing the filter, adding to the user-friendly experience.

Moving to the bottom part of the robot, it closely resembles the S7 MaxV Ultra with a single bristleless brush roller, the VibraRise mop, and a side brush. Additionally, it features wheels and sensors for seamless navigation and thorough cleaning.

In terms of sensors, the S7 Max Ultra employs a Reactive Tech infrared sensor instead of an RGB camera found in the MaxV model. Although capable of detecting obstacles, the Reactive Tech sensor is not as advanced as the Reactive 3D sensor in the S8 Pro Ultra. As a result, the S7 Max Ultra may have limitations in identifying specific objects and could potentially miss smaller items like cables.

Now let’s talk about the docking station, which measures 42.4 x 50.5 x 42 cm. It features two visible water tanks resembling ink cartridges and a single LED indicator that provides charging status and alerts. The dock’s design may appear bulky and conspicuous, not necessarily blending seamlessly with other home furniture.

However, the dock offers convenient functionality. The water tanks are easy to lift and replace, and they can be fully opened for effortless refilling, unlike the S8 Pro Ultra. The generous capacities of the tanks allow for 3L of clean water and 2.5L of dirty water storage. Adjacent to the water tanks, the dust bag is housed under a plastic cover, ensuring a more harmonious integration with the overall design.

Similar to other high-end docking stations, the Roborock S7 Max Ultra’s dock features a plastic receptacle to prevent the mop from moistening hardwood floors. Additionally, it incorporates a small sliding brush specifically designed for cleaning the robot’s mop, ensuring maximum hygiene and preventing odors.

Navigation system, Setup and software

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra continues the tradition of its predecessors with the inclusion of a laser rangefinder, front lasers for obstacle detection, a side sensor for wall tracking, and vacuum sensors. This advanced array of sensors allows the robot to navigate your home effectively. Even if furniture has been rearranged since the map was saved, the S7 Max Ultra quickly recognizes the rooms and begins by skirting the walls before venturing into the interior with its signature zigzag cleaning pattern. It shows great agility in maneuvering around obstacles, rarely colliding with even small objects. However, if confronted with extended obstacles like cables or textiles, it may unintentionally ingest them while attempting to circumvent or clean in proximity. Nevertheless, the S7 Max Ultra exhibits meticulous cleaning performance, leaving no corner overlooked.

Interacting with the S7 Max Ultra can be done through the Roborock or Xiaomi Home app, as well as through voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant. During the initial setup, the robot explores its surroundings to create a map and automatically identifies each room. You have the flexibility to merge and split rooms, assign custom names, and create no-go zones and virtual walls. The app also allows you to customize floor types, cleaning sequences, and even add furniture to personalize the map. If your home has multiple floors or you plan on using the robot in different locations, it can save and remember up to four floor maps and autonomously navigate between them.

This level of customization enables you to clean specific areas or rooms, adjust cleaning settings for each room, including vacuuming, mopping, or both, and customize suction power, scrubbing intensity, and cleaning routes to prioritize speed or effectiveness.

The Roborock app provides real-time status updates and information about the last cleaning cycle, such as duration and cleaned surface, displayed visually on the map. You can truly make the S7 Max Ultra your own by setting cleaning schedules, customizing mop wash frequency, intensity, and drying duration, and even defining the robot’s behavior when encountering carpets. It can intelligently detect carpets and automatically lift its mop to avoid wetting them, or avoid them entirely if desired. Additionally, you can establish off-peak charging hours for the robot, optimizing energy usage and reducing your impact on the grid.

Roborock S7 Max Ultra: Suction and Washing

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra boasts an impressive suction power of 5500 Pa, positioning it between the S7 MaxV (5100 Pa) and the S8 (6000 Pa), according to its specifications. However, in our tests, the S7 Max Ultra outperformed its predecessors, albeit by a slight margin.

On hard floors, the S7 Max Ultra demonstrated excellent cleaning capabilities, successfully vacuuming up 94% of the debris on normal power and 97% on Max+ power. When it came to fine carpets, the results were even better, with the S7 Max Ultra achieving 95% and 99% cleaning efficiency. While facing our thick carpet, the robot faced some challenges, but it still managed to remove a respectable 70% to 78% of the waste, showcasing its commendable performance.

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra utilizes VibraRise technology for floor washing. This version of VibraRise is the same as the one introduced in the initial S7 model, rather than the 2.0 version exclusive to the S8 Pro Ultra. VibraRise technology allows the robot to vibrate the mop and raise it to prevent wetting carpets or to perform dry vacuuming without mopping.

When the robot simultaneously vacuums and washes the floor, the effectiveness of the mop is moderate. It can effectively remove fresh stains, but tougher, ingrained stains are likely to remain. In our laboratory tests, only soda stains were completely eliminated after drying. However, better results can be achieved in wash-only mode, particularly with the Deep+ mode engaged. Deep+ mode modifies both the robot’s movement pattern and speed, enabling it to rapidly move back and forth while taking its time to clean. In this mode, the S7 Max Ultra managed to eliminate soda stains as well as a significant portion of oil stains in just one pass. Users have the option to program up to three passes, selecting specific rooms or areas to be cleaned. By the end of the second pass, the oil stains were completely gone, and the same applied to carbon stains after the third pass.

Noise

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra incorporates some of the noise control advancements seen in the S8 series. When operating in normal suction mode, our sound level meter recorded a maximum of 52 dB(A), which indicates that the robot operates at a relatively quiet level. However, when switched to Max+ mode, the noise level increases to around 63 dB(A). While the S7 Max Ultra may not be the most discreet robot on the market, it is still possible to let it work without having to leave the house, especially when using the normal suction mode.

It’s worth noting that the noise level of the docking station during automatic emptying can be higher. At a distance of one meter, we measured up to 70 dB(A), which is noticeably louder. However, it’s important to consider that the automatic emptying process lasts only for 30 seconds. Although it may not be completely negligible, the short duration of the noise emission during automatic emptying minimizes any significant disturbance. Nevertheless, if you rely on the continuous humming of the robot to help you sleep, it’s possible that the noise from the station’s automatic emptying process could potentially wake you up from a nap.

Autonomy

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra is equipped with the same 5200 mAh battery found in the latest S-series models. Despite the mentioned differences in power, the battery life is quite similar. With normal power, the robot can vacuum for nearly 2 hours and 52 minutes, while with Max+ power, it can operate for 1 hour and 28 minutes. This means that the S7 Max Ultra has the capability to complete the cleaning cycle of even relatively spacious homes on a single charge.

In the event that the robot does run out of battery before completing the task, it can easily return to its charging station for a quick recharge. The charging time is impressively efficient, taking just a little over 3 hours to go from 15% battery capacity to a full 100%. This rapid charging capability ensures that the S7 Max Ultra spends more time cleaning and less time waiting to recharge, providing a seamless cleaning experience.

Roborock S7 Max Ultra: Conclusion

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra proves to be a compelling robot vacuum cleaner. With its exceptional combination of powerful suction and effective floor washing capabilities, it offers a comprehensive cleaning solution. The inclusion of a multifunction station allows the robot to work autonomously for several days, making it convenient for users who prefer less frequent manual intervention.

The S7 Max Ultra’s navigation system is highly efficient, enabling it to navigate and clean your home with ease. However, it is important to note that the robot may still require some tidying up of objects and obstacles before its passage, as it is not completely immune to obstructions.
