Tronsmart BANG MAX: Design
The Tronsmart BANG MAX is an absolute beast in the world of portable speakers. This audio powerhouse measures 26 x 47 x 20 cm and tips the scales at a hefty 6kg. While it comes with a sturdy handle to facilitate transportation, it’s not a speaker you’ll want to carry for miles if you’re parked far from your destination. However, its substantial size and weight are indicative of the remarkable audio experience it delivers.
One standout feature of the BANG MAX speaker is its IPX6 waterproof rating, ensuring it can withstand trips to the beach or pool without any worries, as long as you don’t fully submerge it in water.
Under the hood, this speaker boasts a three-way active speaker system that packs a serious punch. It features two 30-watt woofers, two 20-watt mid-tweeters, and two 10-watt tweeters, accompanied by two passive radiators—one on each end of its enclosure. This setup generates a whopping 130 watts of dynamic power, providing a truly immersive stereo experience that can fill any space with high-quality sound.
Connectivity is a breeze with Bluetooth 5.3 support, although it sticks to the SBC codec and doesn’t include higher-resolution codecs like aptX or LDAC. The front of the unit sports a silicone control strip, housing a power button, Bluetooth indicator, volume controls, and a multi-function play/pause button that also handles phone calls.
A noteworthy addition is the SoundPulse button, which activates Tronsmart’s custom digital signal-processing technology. This DSP aims to improve sound quality by reducing harsh noises and enhancing the stereo soundstage, ensuring a premium listening experience.
The control strip also includes a stereo pairing button, allowing you to pair two BANG MAX speakers for even more immersive audio. Although, given the speaker’s impressive stereo imaging capabilities, you may find this feature unnecessary.
For those who crave an even larger audio setup, there’s a TuneConn button that enables you to daisy chain up to 100 compatible Tronsmart speakers. This can create a truly astonishing audio effect when you have a group of Tronsmart enthusiasts.
Turning to the rear of the speaker, you’ll find various inputs along the bottom to expand your music playback options beyond Bluetooth. These include a microSD card slot, a USB slot, a 3.5mm aux-in port, and a DC power input for charging.
What sets the Tronsmart BANG MAX apart from other portable speakers are its two ¼-inch inputs—one for a microphone or guitar and the other for a microphone only. Each input has its own volume knob and gain control, making it versatile for various uses. You can use the BANG MAX as a karaoke machine, singing along to your favorite tracks, or set it up as a portable PA system for outdoor performances. An Echo button on the front control panel even adds reverb effects to your vocals, enhancing your performance.
The Tronsmart BANG MAX not only impresses with its hardware but also offers a feature-rich companion app that enhances your user experience. Let’s take a closer look at what this app brings to the table.
Starting with the settings panel, the Tronsmart app provides you with various options to manage your speaker. You can conveniently update the speaker’s firmware, ensuring you always have the latest enhancements and bug fixes. The app also offers a disconnect button, allowing you to quickly sever the connection between the speaker and your audio source. Additionally, it provides access to the user manual, ensuring you have all the information you need at your fingertips. Another handy feature is the ability to set a timer for the speaker to automatically power off, which can be useful to conserve battery life.
The app’s main screen provides essential information and controls. You’ll find a battery level indicator, ensuring you’re aware of the remaining power. A volume slider lets you adjust the speaker’s output to your liking, giving you precise control over the audio. Play/pause, skip forward, and skip back buttons make it easy to manage your music playback.
One of the features of the app is its EQ settings panel. This allows you to fine-tune the speaker’s audio output to match your preferences.
Additionally, the controller panel within the app offers a range of functions that enhance your overall experience. Here, you can effortlessly switch between different inputs, making it simple to transition from Bluetooth to other playback options like microSD, USB, or aux-in. You can also activate stereo pairing mode to create a stereo pair with another BANG MAX speaker, further elevating your audio experience. This is a feature that truly enhances the immersive quality of your music.
One particularly useful function offered by the app is the ability to power off the speaker remotely. This feature is especially valuable when you’re using the BANG MAX in scenarios where it’s covering a wide area, such as a party or outdoor event.
Lastly, the Tronsmart app includes control buttons for managing the BANG MAX’s flashing lights. This allows you to customize the speaker’s lighting effects, adding a visual element to your music experience.
Once I started listening to this Tronsmart BANG MAX, I found myself leaving the SoundPulse DSP activated most of the time. Sure, SoundPulse adds its own flavor to the music mix, altering it in noticeable ways. However, this alteration resulted in a more engaging and lively listening experience, especially when I was enjoying outdoor activities.
The Tronsmart app offers various EQ options to cater to your preferences. Alongside SoundPulse, you’ll find the Default (flat) EQ, Deep Bass, Rock, Classical, and a Custom setting option. I tinkered with the Custom settings to find the perfect EQ for my taste, but I ended up returning to the SoundPulse option, as it added an extra layer of excitement to the music. However, I did notice that the Deep Bass setting tended to drown out the midrange and treble frequencies, resulting in a muffled playback experience. The Rock and Classical settings, on the other hand, didn’t seem to make a significant difference in the sound quality.
In reality, the choice often comes down to Default and SoundPulse, which is why there’s a dedicated button on the front of the speaker for quick access. Still, the Custom EQ settings can be enticing for those who like to fine-tune their audio to meet their personal standards.
Tronsmart promises that the BANG MAX can reach a whopping 110dB of loudness. While I managed to hit that number on my decibel meter, it’s worth noting that the audio started to distort for me when I pushed the volume beyond about 99dB. Nevertheless, 99dB is more than enough volume for most people and will easily fill a room or outdoor space.
One area where the BANG MAX truly excels in its bass performance. It pumps out an impressive amount of bass, and what’s even more remarkable is how far that bass carries. While this might be a bit too much for listeners who prefer genres like jazz, classical, or acoustic music, it’s an absolute delight for those who revel in the thumping beats of pop, hip-hop, or rock. The tradeoff is clear, but I personally found it to be a thrilling and dynamic addition to the overall listening experience.
In terms of battery life, Tronsmart promises up to 24 hours on a single charge. However, it’s worth noting that this estimate can vary depending on your usage. At around 75dB, you can expect to get more than 20 hours of playtime. The battery level lights on the left end of the control strip will keep you informed about the remaining charge.
Charging the speaker from empty to full takes approximately 5.5 hours with the included 15V power adapter.
Tronsmart BANG MAX: Conclusion
The Tronsmart BANG MAX is an exceptional portable speaker that excels in delivering powerful, high-quality audio experiences for a wide range of occasions.
Whether you’re hosting outdoor gatherings, enjoying music by the pool, or looking for a versatile speaker for events, the BANG MAX offers an impressive blend of features and performance at an affordable price.
